Basic Terms and Definitions: BDSM 101

«S&M- Sadomasochism     
Sadist/Sadism- someone who obtains pleasure from inflicting pain on others/ pleasure obtained by inflicting pain (physical or psychological) on others     
Masochist/Masochism- someone who obtains pleasure by having pain inflicted on them/ pleasure obtained by the infliction of pain (physical or psychological)

«Kink(y) - “Slang. Showing or appealing to bizarre or deviant tastes, especially of a sexual or erotic nature” Exploration beyond vanilla.
«Polyamory- participation in multiple and simultaneous loving and/or sexual relationships
«Safe Sane and Consensual- a code by which Leather Folk live by
Safe- not causing harm or injury; having a low incidence of adverse reactions and significant side effects when adequate instructions for use are given and having a low potential for harm     Sane- Mentally sound; possessing a rational mind; having the mental faculties in such condition as to be able to anticipate and judge of the effect of one's actions in an ordinary manner. Sober (Habitually abstemious in the use of alcoholic liquors or drugs; not intoxicated or affected by the use of drugs.)    Consensual- the act of acceptance or approval of what is planned or done by another; acquiescence; mutual permission; Agreement as to opinion or a course of action
«Scene- the play that happens after a negotiated start time and before the negotiated stop time
«Play- To occupy oneself in amusement, sport, or other recreation; to act or conduct oneself in a specified way    
«Top- “the doer” the person in the active and/or dominant role; the facilitator of action in a scene    
Bottom- “the receiver” the person in the receiving and/or submissive role of a scene, the acceptor of a scene    
Switch- a person who is comfortable in either role (top or bottom) in a scene; one who is both sides of the “Kinky Coin”      
«Bi-Kink- one who plays with both/all sexes (usually heterosexual or homosexual otherwise)    
«Poly-Kink- one who plays with more than one partner (usually monogamous otherwise)    
«Leather/Leather Folk- People who live in the mindset of M/s, D/s or one of the subsidiaries of the BDSM lifestyle; Lifestyle
«M/s- Master/slave    
D/s- Dominant/submissive    
Collaring- the act of physically claiming a bottom as your own    
Ownership- the mutually consensual act of owning another person, or being owned by another person
«Fetish/Fetishist- Something, such as a material object or a nonsexual part of the body that arouses sexual desire; a person attracted to a specific thing, for example: boots
«Role Playing- the act of playing a role; becoming a character or personality type for a period of time        
Fantasy- imagination unrestricted by reality; An imagined event or sequence of mental images, such as a daydream, usually fulfilling a wish or psychological need    
«Vanilla- Slang.  basic or ordinary; “mundane”
«Common Sense- “The complement of those cognitions or convictions which we receive from nature, which all men possess in common, and by which they test the truth of knowledge and the morality of actions.” Sir W. Hamilton
